Injectables and Dermal Fillers

West Hollywood anti-aging physician and regenerative medicine specialist Dr. Nathan Ford uses injectables such as volume enhancement facial fillers and muscle balancing neurotoxins to correct undesirable signs of aging such as wrinkles, sagging skin, depleted volume, creases, and folds. After an evaluation with Dr. Ford, together you will discuss the best option for a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. Below are Dr. Ford’s favorite Injectables to use.

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA)

BOTOX® Cosmetic has a one-of-a-kind formulation and only BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA-approved to temporarily make moderate to severe frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines look better in adults. Younger patients have been increasingly hopping on the Botox bandwagon as a preventative measure—even before the wrinkles appear or deepen. That’s why dermatologists can’t recommend the best age to start or try Botox, since it depends on your goals, your facial expressions, and your preference. If all you see when you look at a photo of yourself is that forehead wrinkle instead of your bright eyes or smile, it might make you happier to get the wrinkle taken care of. “Each time we raise our eyebrows, or scowl by bringing our eyebrows together, the wrinkles in these locations get deeper and more numerous. It happens slowly over a long period of time, so you don’t notice it on a daily basis,” Dr. Ford says. “But if you look at the horizontal wrinkles in your forehead when you are not raising your eyebrows, you will see an increase in these wrinkles when you do raise your brows. If you then hold that raised brow position for 10 seconds, you will notice when you relax, your forehead wrinkles look deeper and more numerous. Botox prevents this from happening.” It’s almost never too early to start a good anti-aging regimen.

What is Botox?

Botox is a drug made from a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It's the same toxin that causes a life-threatening type of food poisoning called botulism. Doctors use it in small doses to treat health problems, including

  • Temporary smoothing of facial wrinkles and improving your appearance

  • Severe underarm sweating

  • Cervical dystonia - a neurological disorder that causes severe neck and shoulder muscle contractions

  • Blepharospasm - uncontrollable blinking

  • Strabismus - misaligned eyes

  • Chronic migraine

  • Overactive bladder

Botox injections work by weakening or paralyzing certain muscles or by blocking certain nerves. The effects last about 4 months, depending on what you are treating. The most common side effects are pain, swelling, or bruising at the injection site. You could also have flu-like symptoms, headache, and upset stomach. Injections in the face may also cause temporary drooping eyelids. You should not use Botox if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Some critics say Botox makes you lose all the personality from your face, leaving you with a significantly less range of motion when you laugh, or get angry or upset. While it’s true that your movement will be restricted, a moderate amount of Botox will still allow you to react and communicate in a lively way. “Botox relaxes the wrinkle-forming facial muscles at the sight of injection, such as crow’s feet, glabella (the ‘furrows’ in between the brows), and frontalis (forehead lines),” Dr. Ford says. “Botox does not affect other facial muscles that are used for overall facial expressions.” Although office visits can vary, the procedure generally takes 10 to 20 minutes. Though results vary, there is typically a noticeable improvement in moderate to severe frown lines within 5-7 days.

Dysport (Botulinum Toxin)

Dysport is another injection used to temporarily improve the look of your moderate to severe frown lines without changing the look of your whole face. The untreated facial muscles still work normally, allowing you to freely show facial expressions, such as smiling, in untreated areas.

What is Dysport?

For adults who want a natural look, there’s Dysport, a prescription injection proven to help smooth the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows without changing the look or movement of the rest of your face. Untreated muscles still work normally, so you can continue to express feelings naturally. It’s the lines that are minimized, not your expressions. The dose of Dysport is not the same as the dose of any other botulinum toxin product and cannot be compared to the dosage of any other botulinum toxin product that you may have previously used.

And because Dysport delivers the natural-looking results people want, 97% of users say they’d do it again. Additionally, Dysport is approved in 69 countries and has 25 years of clinical experience worldwide. The procedure generally takes 10 to 20 minutes. Though results vary, there is typically a noticeable improvement in moderate to severe frown lines between the brows within 2-3 days. One treatment of Dysport can last for up to 4 months, so the effect of repeat treatment with Dysport may be comparable to the first use.
