Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Ford Wellness Center is proud to offer PRP treatment, a well-known treatment to accelerate tissue healing. Not only will this revolutionary procedure promote faster healing, but there’s almost no downtime, meaning you can get back to living your life.
Regenerative medicine specialist, Dr. Nathan D. Ford, uses the most innovative treatments available to give each patient the best possible outcome. One such treatment, platelet-rich plasma therapy, more commonly known as PRP injections, is a medical procedure used to help a person with a soft tissue injury (I.e muscle, tendon, and cartilage).
How it works
PRP therapy works by utilizing the platelets from the patient’s own blood to promote tissue growth and renewal. Our blood’s platelets, used for clotting blood, also contain proteins called “growth factors.” These growth factors help to rebuild tissue in many different types of injuries.
Who Can Benefit From Platelet-Rich Plasma Treatment?
PRP therapy can benefit anyone with specific muscular, bone, cartilage or tendon injuries, as well as difficult to treat wounds. Because of this, the treatment is becoming common practice in the world of professional sports, where athletes depend greatly on being able to recover from injuries as fast as possible. Both golfer Tiger Woods and tennis player Rafael Nadal have benefited greatly from PRP injections in treating their respective injuries, as have many other athletes in the NFL, MLB, and NBA, including, Kobe Bryant.
The PRP treatments at Ford Wellness Center can improve and effectively treat:
- Ankle sprains
- Tennis elbow
- Ligament sprains
- ACL injuries
- Stress fractures
- Runner's knee
- Difficult wounds
Dr. Nathan Ford has leveraged his expertise in administering PRP therapy by developing a unique technique to utilize this proven fast-healing treatment with a cosmetic procedure associated with the anti-aging part of his practice. Those seeking innovative treatments to bring a more youthful appearance and rejuvenate skin can also benefit from PRP therapy with Dr. Ford's customized Glow Facial. Harvesting and utilizing growth factors can not only speed up soft tissue injuries, among many other types of injuries, but also aid in rapid collagen reproduction to bring new life to your skin.
What To Expect From PRP Treatment
A patient receiving PRP therapy at Ford Wellness Center will first get a sample of their own blood drawn. After the blood is collected, the platelets are separated from the red and white blood cells using a centrifuge. The result is plasma with a high concentration of platelets - typically keep about five to ten times more platelets than normal blood. This plasma is then injected by Dr. Ford into the injured (or treated) area. The entire process generally takes less than two hours.
The side effects from PRP therapy are minimal. Most patients experience some soreness for two to three days after the injection. The overall pain from the injury will typically begin to decrease after about four weeks. In order to gain the maximum benefits from PRP therapy most patients can expect to receive about three treatments, spaced six weeks apart.
Why Is PRP Therapy So Beneficial?
One of the biggest benefits of PRP therapy is the fast healing time. Most patients can expect a relatively rapid recovery. The downtime can range from a few days to just a couple of weeks, depending on the individual patient and the type of injury being treated. PRP therapy has been credited with reducing the recovery time for many types of injuries up to 50%.
Another benefit of PRP therapy is that it uses the patient’s own platelets. This eliminates the risk of the body rejecting the platelets and minimizes a lot of other risks as well. Further, unlike invasive surgery, PRP therapy at the Ford Wellness Center is a simple procedure, typically treated by means of a single injection into the injured area.
Finally, compared to surgery the cost of PRP therapy is very affordable, making it a very attractive alternative.

Stem Cell Therapy
How Stem Cell Therapy Can Benefit You
Dr. Nathan Ford at the Ford Wellness Center in the greater Los Angeles area has always been on the cutting-edge of the latest medical therapies. One such therapy utilizes the patient’s own stem cells to help treat a wide array of conditions.
While the exact science behind stem cell therapy is complicated, the basics are simple. The following is a brief guide to what stem cell therapy is, what it treats and how it can help you.
What are stem cells?
Stem cells are an incredibly unique and important type of cell within the human body. Unlike most cells that have a specialized function, stem cells are unspecialized. This means a person’s stem cells can, in many cases, be transplanted to a different part of the body, where it can become tissue or organ-specific. With this kind of flexibility, it’s easy to see why advancements in stem cell related treatments are a hot topic within the medical community.
Not all stem cells are created equal, however. The two types of stem cells are embryonic and adult. In stem cell therapy, adult stem cells are used from the patient’s very own body.
How does stem cell treatment work?
Because stem cells are non-specialized, they can be used to treat different problems in different parts of the body. Doctors, such as Dr. Ford, who specialize in stem cell therapy are able to use a person’s stem cells to treat a variety of injuries since the cells literally regrow into the type of tissue that requires healing. For example, a Ford Wellness Center patient who has a torn cartilage can have their stem cells injected into the injured area, and the stem cells will regrow into cartilage tissue. These remarkable cells can be used to regrow a variety of human tissue, such as skin, muscle, joint or tendons.
During the treatment, the doctor will place a specimen of a patient’s cells, usually taken from the fat in the buttocks, into a specialized machine called a centrifuge, which is designed to separate the cells, creating a sample of isolated stem cells for the doctor’s use in treating the patient. Once this is done, Dr. Ford will inject the patient’s stem cells into the area being treated. The pain during stem cell therapy is minimal. The side effects are also minimal, yet some patients may feel some soreness in the treated area for a few days following treatment. Patients can usually continue with their daily routine after their appointment. Dr. Ford will advise about which activities to avoid and when the patient needs to return for a follow-up visit.

Whether or not someone is a good candidate for stem cell therapy depends on multiple factors; such as the condition being treated, the overall health of the patient and if there are other treatments available.
If you think stem cell therapy is right for you and you live in West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, or anywhere in the greater Los Angeles area, schedule a consultation at the Ford Wellness Center today. What to choose?
Stem cell therapy vs PRP therapy?
Stem cell therapy and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy are similar in what they can treat, but each therapy has a different mechanism for promoting healing. For example, PRP therapy uses something called “Growth factors” which are derived from the patient’s platelets in their blood. These growth factors then help by signaling stem cells to rebuild vital tissues needed during healing.
On the other hand, stem cell therapy utilizes the actual stem cells, which are directly applied or injected into an injured area. Once they are established in the tissue, they begin replicating and rebuilding that tissue.
Whether or not you will benefit more from stem cell therapy or PRP is a decision to be made between you and Dr. Ford.
